Sports Godfathers pledged P160M for SEAG 2005

A total of P160M million was committed by top businessmen in support of the traning of Filipono athletes for the upcoming South East

Asian (SEA) Games during the pledging session held in Malacañang last January 18, 2005.

The pledging, session, inspired by the revered Filipino “ninong” (godfather) tradition was called for by the First Gentleman. He believes that this concept would help bring unity sports.

The Godfather’s funds will be instrumental in sustaining the training of athletes from 15 focus sports in China this July to September. The focus sports are athletics, archery, badminton, diving, fencing, volleyball, weightlifting, wrestling, wushu, and basketball.

The First Gentleman is targeting no less than the overall championship of the biennial meet with at least 100 gold medals in 41 featured sports discipline.

Sports Godfathers include San Miguel Corporation (pledge of 100 million for training of 16 teams), Smart, Nestle, Lucio Tan Jr., Globe Telecoms, PAGCOR, Samsung, the Aboitiz Group, Yuchengco Group of Companies, ICTSI, the Fil-Chinese Community, Bank of Commerce, Cathy Pacific Steel, Philam Foundation, PCSO, Rey David, Vivian Yuchengco, among others.

A SEAG 2005 Training committee was formed composed of PSC National Training Director Michael Keon, FGF Monitoring Chief, Butch Tuason, Philippine Olympic Committee representatives Joey Romasanta and Steve Hontiveros.

This group ensured that the funds were maximized and training requirements met which gave the Philippines the overall championship in the 23rd South East Asian Games with 112 gold medals, the first-ever in the history of the country.
